Roadshow storms into Nelspruit
January 2004
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
Trucks, trailers, vans and an army of highly skilled personnel invaded Nelspruit on 20 November 2003. At this point one must wonder how different life would be here without the Venter trailer. This was the last event on the calendar of roadshows for the year and carried an air of anticipation as this was an area not visited before with such a focused group of control products.
Relieved to have an airconditioned venue in this very humid climate, the exhibitors set about constructing their displays and were ready at 12h00 when the doors opened to the control and instrumentation community in the area.
The Penmac Roadshows are not viewed as a social get-together but rather as an event for serious technical business people. This was again reflected at this Nelspruit show where some visitors travelled long distances from as far as Komatipoort, Barberton and even Swaziland. An interesting profile of visitors attended this show which is reflected as follows: instrumentation tech/mech - 44,4%, electricians 13,5%, business owners 12,4%, business managers 7,4%, commercial buyers 6,1%, engineers 2,5%, company directors 2,5%, other 6%. To assist the local community on the latest worldwide trends in process databus technology, the Profibus user group again hosted a presentation on the trends in this technology. These presentations are an invaluable service for anyone implementing digital communication technology on their plant.
Exhibiting companies in Nelspruit were: ABB Automation, AC/DC Dynamics, Adroit Technologies, Airtech, Alstom Automation, Anglo Allied Engineering, Asco, Atlas Industrial Systems, AWR Smith Process Instrumentation, Burkert Contromatic, Citect Africa, Energy Metals, Hanna Instruments, Ind Auto & Control, Instrotech, Krohne, Lapp Cables, Loadtech, Mantech Electronics, Mega Measurement, N & Z, National Instruments, Newco /Laser M, OEN Enterprises, Phoenix Contact, P&F Products, PPE Tech, RJ Programmable, RS Components SA, Tecmo Automation, Temperature Controls, Thermo Ramsey, Throughput Technologies, Valve & Automation, Wika Instruments, WNIP, Yokogawa SA.
The exhibition programme for 2004 is already set and out of a total of 10 venues, two will be new areas not visited before. In addition to the regular exhibition program, 2004 will see the introduction of a scheduled training program running in conjunction with the roadshows. This education program is not product specific and is geared to address generic instrumentation and control subjects identified by the industry. Three two hour sessions will be hosted on an exhibition day, and these will be charged for at a cost of R250 per delegate per session.
The Penmac Roadshow program for 2004 is as follows:
Cape Town/Milnerton/4 February
Witbank/Middleburg/25 March Phalaborwa/3 June
Secunda/22 July
Mossel Bay/17 August
Port Elizabeth/19 August

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
