RS232 to Ethernet pipe - developed in SA
December 2003

SAN People, a South African company specialising in Ethernet connectivity will soon launch its 'MULTeNET' brand. A new range of value-for-money serial to Ethernet connectivity products will be released under the new brand.
The brand name was chosen to better reflect the high tech nature of the company's products. This new range is a remarkable achievement for SAN People in terms of meeting demanding development project deadlines. This rapid time-to-market has resulted in making MULTeNET one of the first to use the Atmel ARM 9 processor. The resulting platform offers lower latency and more functionality at a lower cost.
For the technical gurus, SAN People took the standard ARM-Linux kernel and ported it to the Atmel AT91RM9200 processor. They then developed the device drivers needed to interface with the peripherals provided by the processor (serial, Ethernet, realtime clock, watchdog, SPI, data flash, USB, etc).
The new PocketPAD product is expected to be released in December this year, in its most basic form as a simple RS232 to Ethernet pipe, with many software features. Variants to be released in February 2004 will support a fibre-optic Ethernet interface, a power-over-Ethernet interface, and a multidrop Ethernet interface. SAN People expects these new products to have a significant impact on their export markets.
