Data Acquisition & Telemetry

24/7 realtime wireless data transfer via GSM

December 2003 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

The latest developments in wireless data communications from Opto 22 and Nokia facilitate the access to data from remote applications using the GSM networks and the latest in `general packet radio systems' (GPRS). The GSM/GPRS facility is an `always-on' connection and does not require a dial out connection in order for the transfer of data to be transmitted. GPRS tariff rates are based on a `Per Meg' of data and is based on a sliding scale.

In order to monitor and manage the GPRS and SMS traffic, Nokia has developed the Nokia-M2M Gateway for 'machine to machine' applications that is currently being hosted at exact mobile. The Nokia-M2M Gateway allows one to access multiple remote sites and applications and transfer the data directly into the various 'business management system' using 'CORBA'. Nokia-M2M Gateway caters for all GSM bearers (ie, SMS, CSD, HSCSD, USSD, GPRS etc) to be used depending on the type of data, time of day, rate schedules, etc.

Opto 22 has developed all the necessary hardware that will interface to any analog, digital and serial device as well as the software drivers and driver interfaces necessary to allow one to configure the required process control and monitoring application as well as the GPRS data to be transferred from the application via the Gateway to the user's custom designed Internet website. The Gateway allows for multiple remote applications to be monitored 'simultaneously' from one client application website.

Demo sites

Currently three demo test sites are running, these allow the clients access to their remote applications via their own custom designed websites on a 24/7 basis. The remote data is available in realtime and is logged to an historic and realtime reporting database. The data from the remote applications can be compiled and represented in a standard Excel type spreadsheet reporting format. This can be e-mailed directly to the plant or factory manager on a daily basis for analysis.

Various alarm conditions can be configured to be sent directly to maintenance personnel (depending on the alarm condition, ie, electrical or mechanical) for the quick response to any probable breakdown. Preventative and routine maintenance can be scheduled for the equipment based on its run-time and historic log file trends.

Suitable applications

Storage tanks and silos, refrigeration and chiller plants, electrical substations and transformers, reservoir and pump stations, generators and compressors, computer server rooms, security and building management, gas burners and furnaces, gas, water and electricity metering systems, warehousing dispatch and receiving, consignment stock billing systems, heavy duty earth moving and construction equipment, etc.
