Affordable data logger for local market

October 2003 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Much has been discussed around the issue of collecting production data from the factory and linking it to the ERP systems that control the business. For the smaller business it is difficult to justify the relative large expenses for unknown results when it does not have an ERP system. The data must then still be dissected to give it value and this becomes another unknown cost.

As there is a growing demand for more realtime information from the factory floor AMR realised that there is a need for a simple and affordable product that is easy to implement. With this in mind, AMR has recently acquired the agency for a locally developed data logger, targeted at the small to medium sized companies to initiate pilot projects.

The data logger's primary function is to read data from the factory floor and write it to a SQL Database. The secondary function is to view the live data and trend the historical data from the database. All scada systems are capable of logging data to their proprietary database. However, to make data easily accessible to other MIS systems requires an external database and additional engineering.

Included in the package are the following components:

* I/O server to communicate to the PLC or remote I/O on factory floor.

* The engine that reads data from the I/O server and writes it to the SQL Database.

* SQL Database which contains the configuration and historical data.

* Graphical user interface for viewing live and historical information. It reads the live data from the engine and historical data from the database.

* Configuration tools for setting up the data and graphics.

The package is downloaded from the website or sold on CD. After installation, the engine will run for the first hour every time the PC starts up. This allows prospective clients to test the product before buying. The product must then be registered in a similar way as Windows XP in that the product is licensed only to that PC. The data logger comes in three models, beginning at a few thousand rand:

* Entry level which is limited to 32 tags (data words).

* Mid, which is limited to 256 tags.

* Full version (unlimited tags).

Features include: tags to log on event or time-based (per ms, sec, min or hour); alarms based on events or value setpoint; messages or e-mails sent on alarms; historical data (last 5 minutes) exported to file on event; set-up files can be exported and imported (easy for multiple set-ups); data can be accessed from another PC on the network with only the GUI installed; no extra licence required.
