ABB wins US$10 million contract for Mondi's expansion project
October 2003
News
ABB, a leading power and automation technology group, has received a US$10 million order to supply electrification and automation equipment to Mondi's Kraft mill in Richards Bay as part of the mill's US$260 million expansion project. The project will see the mill's annual pulp production increase from 575 000 tonnes to 720 000 tonnes.
ABB will supply and install sectional drives utilising the latest Industrial IT AC800M control platform for the pulp machine and the new range of ACS800 variable speed drives for process fans and pumps. New electrical equipment will be installed, including a 132 kV substation, complete with power and distribution transformers as well as high voltage cabling. The delivery scope includes medium voltage switchgear at 11 kV and 3,3 kV with digital (electronic) protection, networked to a mill-wide substation automation system. In addition, ABB will supply INSUM withdrawable low voltage motor control centres equipped with intelligent motor control.
"ABB is proud to be part of this project, which will meet increasing market demand for Mondi's Baycel pulp within the industry," says Urs Leuenberger, ABB senior vice president. "We will work with our pulp and paper group in Finland to provide our most advanced and efficient technology for this project." The
project completion will be in phases, with the final phase scheduled for February 2005.
