Steam atomising desuperheater

July 2003 Temperature Measurement

Mitech's steam atomising desuperheater is designed to reduce the temperature of super heated steam. This is achieved by adding vaporised water to the steam, where the small droplets will absorb energy, and the temperature of the steam will decrease.

The unit consists of external water and steam inlets, each leading to a nozzle or a set of nozzles, depending on the requirements. The steam flows through the internal venturi shaped nozzle drawing in the low temperature, pressurised water. The water mixes with the steam, is atomised in the process and carried into the main steam line. This results in an increased flow of steam at a lower temperature. Adjusting the water flow by means of a spray water control valve can therefore control the temperature of the steam.

With its compact design, the steam atomising desuperheater provides good atomisation across a wide range of flows, uses low-pressure water, has a good turndown ratio and provides a low-pressure drop in main steam line.
