Temperature probes with ATEX approval

May 2003 Temperature Measurement

Thermometers may be integrated into intrinsically safe applications only when the maximum current, maximum voltage, power rating, and the self-heating effect at the measurement tip, have been checked. ASSTech is offering Jumo ATEX approved temperature probes that observe all the regulations. They can be used in the Ex zones 0 (1 G), 1 (2 G), 2 (3 G) of all areas with an explosion hazard (except in mines with a firedamp hazard).

The approval covers all the usual terminal heads, and all conventional process connections, such as threads, flanges and weld-in pockets. Protection fittings in stainless steel, titanium, tantalum, Iconel or Hastelloy and various coatings ensure optimum life expectancy with aggressive media. The devices' temperature sensing range (-200 to +600°C) is achieved with one or two platinum Pt100 sensors. A choice of 2-, 3- or 4-wire circuit connections is available.

ATEX

The new EU Directive 94/9/EC (ATEX), which will apply without restrictions throughout the European Union from July 2003, sets out the requirements to be met by equipment with an explosion protection. ASSTech's temperature probes for process technology, sourced from Jumo in Fulda, Germany, already comply with ATEX approval. The ATEX approval extends to versions with an intrinsically safe transmitter integrated in the terminal head, which guarantees safe signal transmission, even over long distances.
