Pressure Measurement & Control

The right pressure transmitter for every industry

October 2014 Pressure Measurement & Control

As part of its drive towards increased levels of customer service and efficiency, Siemens Corporate has identified process automation as a key area for global growth. So much so, that the company has restructured itself to create the new and dedicated Process Automation business unit. From 1 October, Ryan Chetty will lead this division in South Africa and one of the plans is to grow the sale of the Sitrans P pressure transmitter range in the local market.

“Pressure is such a versatile measurement,” says Chetty, “because it can be used to measure other process parameters as well. For instance, hydrostatic pressure measurement can be used to measure the level in a distillation column. Another example is the use of differential pressure to measure flow.”

Siemens has one of the most comprehensive pressure transmitter ranges on the market, covering everything from low-cost general purpose devices to top of the range high-accuracy instruments with ultra-fast response times that offer 100% dependability.

“When you’re responsible for a plant, there are many things that can put you under pressure,” says Chetty. “Part of my responsibility as head of the new business unit is to find ways to apply our technology so that we can make life easier for our customers. Whether that is finding the correctly certified device for use in a safety critical application in the oil & gas industry, or finding a suitable pressure transmitter in a hygienic housing for a food & beverage application, we can cover almost any requirement with our standard range of transmitters, accessories and process connection options. In the extreme cases where we cannot, Siemens will work together with the plant owner to customise a solution.”

Designed to be rugged, fast and dependable, Siemens incorporates some unique manufacturing methods to ensure the accuracy and repeatability of its Sitrans P pressure transmitter range.

Production is concentrated at the factory in Haguenau, France, a global competence centre for flow and pressure and the production and calibration of field devices. Here, all pressure transmitters of the Sitrans P range are manufactured and then calibrated using the techniques of fixed-point setting. The curve used for conformity is defined in IEC 60770-1, where maximum deviation from ideal is found at the centre of the curve. The advantage of this is that accuracies up to 0,03% can be achieved for turndown ratios up to 10:1, with a maximum turndown of 200:1 being achievable.

Pressure measurement without compromise

The pressure transmitter products in the Sitrans P series offer maximum precision, robustness and ease-of-use. Complying with industry standards and international certifications, Siemens pressure measurement devices fulfil the increasingly complex tasks of the process industry. Additionally, some versions offer diagnostics functions designed to help users keep their plants firmly under control at all times.

Sitrans P500

Sitrans P500
Sitrans P500

The Sitrans P500 has been developed to meet the highest expectations for measuring accuracy, ruggedness, and user-friendliness, and it merges seamlessly into the Sitrans P family. It guarantees an accuracy of 0,03% as well as outstanding values for the influence of static pressure and temperature on the measured result. In this way, it guarantees a total performance of 0,14 % up to a turndown of 10:1. Since this feature means that only one measuring cell can be used for different measuring ranges, inventory costs can be significantly reduced without the need for losses in the quality of the measured result. The high long-term stability of the sensor also reduces maintenance costs thanks to extended calibration intervals, and ensures that you can always rely on the measured results in the long term.

* Accuracy – 0,03% (for a turndown up to 10).

* Long-term stability – 0,05%/5 years.

* Measuring range – 0-1,25 mbar to 0-32 bar.

Sitrans P DS III

The Sitrans P DS III series includes digital pressure transmitters for measuring gauge pressure, absolute pressure, differential pressure, flow and level. Even the standard devices offer comprehensive diagnostic and simulation functions with high reliability. The suitability for use in SIL2 circuits has been certified by external test institutes and with Profibus transmitters, the new Prosafe technology guarantees uniform safety from the control system to the transmitter.

* Accuracy – 0,075%.

* Long-term stability – 0,25%/5 years.

* Measuring range - 0-10 mbar to 0-700 bar.

Sitrans P300

The Sitrans P 300 offers the measuring precision and ruggedness already known from the Sitrans P DS III. Its stainless steel housing with laser-printed nameplate, together with a wide range of hygienic process connections, mean that it is highly suitable for use in the food & beverages industry as well as for pharmaceutical processes. With a maximum deviation in measurement of 0,075% and the proven operating philosophy, it fits seamlessly into the Sitrans P family.

* Accuracy – 0,075%.

* Long-term stability – 0,25%/5 years.

* Measuring range – 0-10 mbar to 0-400 bar.

Sitrans P280

The Sitrans P280 is a WirelessHART pressure transmitter that provides all measured process values as well as diagnostic information, parameters and functions via radio. The device is powered by an internal battery and designed for ultra-low power consumption. The compact and rugged design makes it particularly suitable for direct mounting on tanks and pipes in remote parts of plants, and on moving or rotating equipment for process monitoring or asset management applications.

* Accuracy – 0,25% of full scale.

* Long-term stability – 0,25%/1 year.

* Measuring range – 0-1,6 bar to 0-320 bar.

The Sitrans transmitters P200, P210 and P220 are compact single-range-transmitters for measurement of absolute and gauge pressure. This series includes different types of pressure sensors: two stainless steel and one ceramics sensor to accomplish the measurement of process pressure, absolute pressure and hydrostatic pressure. The measured pressure is available as either a 4-20 mA or a 0-10 V-signal.

* Nonlinearity – 0,25%.

* Long-term stability – 0,25%/1 year.

* Measuring range – P200: 1-60 bar gauge and 0,6-16 bar absolute; P210: 100-600 mbar gauge; P220: 2,5-600 bar gauge.

The Siemens South Africa pressure strategy

Siemens believes that its diverse range of pressure products with market leading features such as accuracy, long-term stability and diagnostics, position it ideally to expand its share of the local transmitter market.

“Year on year we as South Africans face exorbitant price increases which place strain on plant upgrade and maintenance costs,” explains Chetty. “But now, under the guidance of the new corporate initiatives from Siemens, we plan to assist end users to purchase and install high quality pressure devices at affordable prices commensurate with the application requirements.”

The new Siemens South Africa pressure strategy will evolve generally high-cost products to more affordable devices, be it a single replacement or a high piece count project.

“The state of our technology is now at a point where it allows us to take a more commodity based approach to the business of pressure transmitters,” Chetty concludes. “But, along with all the price benefits that accrue because of this, we must never lose sight of the fact that our customers rely heavily on us for engineering and after-sales support. Under the new strategy initiatives these services will remain at their current high levels without any question – in fact, along with price, they form the core drivers.”
