High performance VFFS bagger from tna

August 2012 System Integration & Control Systems Design

Leading global packaging solutions supplier, tna, has introduced the latest in high performance VFFS (vertical form fill seal) bagging. Innovative enhancements to the renowned tna robag 3c bagger have produced the robag 3ci – the bagger that provides up to 30% improvement in performance in both output and reduction in rejects.

The new machine offers throughput rates up to 250 bpm: innovative features including the new tna intelli-weigh omega multi-head scale, the tna hyper-detect metal detector and tna flo-thru former underpin the dramatic increase in performance.

The intelli-weigh omega multi-head scale incorporates a number of novel innovations, for example, digital lattice filters, individually adjustable collating chutes for high-speed discharge and new high-frequency technology to minimise load-cell vibrations. The hyper-detect metal detector includes the company’s patented technology and optimised design to provide one of the highest performance metal detectors in the market, while the tna flo-thru former has been developed to maximise the area inside the tube for uninhibited product flow.

With improved modularity and core component capability, the tna robag 3ci is also upgradable to any combination of jaw size or configuration (rotary single, double, triple or rotary flat jaw), giving food manufacturer’s full flexibility of bag size, type and application from a single system. Other design highlights include a new robust 38 cm screen for increased ease of operation and a simplified film system providing easy film threading with more consistent tension for improved handling and tracking.

“Our technical capabilities are matched with tried and trusted sales service that remains second to none. With these customer supports in place, our newest tna robag is set to boost productivity levels where high volume performance is key,” says Michael Green, managing director, tna.

Suitable for high volumes of sweet and savoury snacks, confections, cereals, pasta, powders, meat and fresh and frozen produce, the tna robag can be fully integrated up and downstream onto existing packaging lines. In addition, tna offers a broad range of complementary solutions including date coders, on-machine and closed loop oil seasoning solutions and horizontal and vibratory conveyors.

Case study – tna unsticks production at Confectionary Trading Company

Specifying the tna robag to address issues of burst and failing seals has significantly increased output and reduced waste at Australian sweet and snack distributer, Confectionery Trading Company.

CTC packs high volumes of hard boiled lollies, gummy sweets and jellies using tna packaging lines. After installing the tna robag 3 – tna customised its flagship VFFS (vertical form fill seal) bagger to handle the sugary confections being packed – loose sugar was found to be making its way into the seals, hampering the sealing process. tna quickly resolved this by incorporating a dust extraction unit, successfully keeping the sugar away from the seals. A second challenge at CTC was the high sealing temperatures causing the bottoms of heavier bags (2 kg) to open. To resolve this, tna installed multi-dumping and stagger delay technology from tna-Yamato, allowing the jaws sufficient time to cool.

“We had used tna equipment in the past so were familiar with its solutions-focused approach and quality after-sales service,” comments CTC director, Dean Theouli. “tna took the time to understand our business, carefully assess our needs and recommend where we could improve and economise our packaging line. We now have three of the tailored tna robag machines installed on site and are reaping the benefits.”

Additional benefits for CTC include a reduction in film use during changeovers thanks to the smaller film handling system, total film waste has halved since the latest tna installation. In terms of speed, throughput levels now reach 140 bpm, with product rejects remaining under 1%. Operators at the CTC plant also responded positively to the upgrade, finding the controls and interface extremely user friendly.

Luigi Di Palma, general manager and director, tna Australia: “We are proud to have contributed to CTC’s business in such a way that we have had an immediate and positive effect on their bottom line. Our technologies and innovations are designed to be flexible and tailored to meet very individual customer requirements. With an emphasis on after-sales support, we are confident that CTC and other customers will come to us in the confidence that tna will make a real difference.”
