July 2009 Enclosures, Cabling & Connectors

Whether cable or wireless, Ethernet or fieldbus, Lapp has the expertise and products to provide connection solutions that work.

In the 1950s, the upswing in industrialisation led to a huge increase in demand for cables and conductors. Faced with this development, company founder Oskar Lapp asked himself a simple question: “How can I optimise the current assembly method and eliminate the time-consuming manual insertion of single cores and switching strands into the outer sheaths?”

His answer: to invent the first industrially produced, flexible, colour-coded signal cable – Olflex.

Today, the company produces cables for mechanical engineering, the automotive industry, measurement and control technology, electrical and installation engineering and many other applications. Over the last five decades the group has grown and expanded its specialist cable business to include wireless technology, industrial Ethernet and Profibus. Some 2500 employees in more than 50 organisations around the world now strive to design, produce and deliver products that meet the founder’s original values of quality and durability in all these technology segments.

Lapp – Cables

Lapp Kabel supplies a variety of cables eg, the Olflex, Unitronic and Hitronic ranges. One of the most popular is Olflex: the range is compatible with requirements in basic, high-flex and robotic control.

* Control cables: The control cable is suitable for basic as well as flexible installations. This cable comes in various options from 0,14–240 mm in diameter, single through 50 core.

* High-flex: The FD cable is used for continuous movement whether it is slow, medium or fast. Designed and tested for more than 6 million bending cycles it ensures peace of mind where downtime cannot be afforded.

* Robot cable: This has been designed for long lifespan by ensuring continuous bending, as well as twisting, does not affect the cable.

Olflex applications

The original design specification for a range of high-performance, flexible, oil resistant control cables rapidly gained acceptance in industry. They became first choice in many high profile and interesting projects around the world.

The pyramid of Cheops

It supposedly took over 2 300 000 giant (2 ton) stone blocks to build King Cheops a pyramid. Researchers think it must have taken over 100 000 slaves. In the access shaft salt-resistant Olflex cables ensure that the airconditioning is kept running smoothly.

The Singapore Flyer

Towering on the skyline this giant Ferris wheel is one of Asia’s most visible tourist attractions. The Flyer offers visitors spectacular panoramic views of the marina and the island city beyond. Over 30 km of halogen free Olflex cables ensure there will be no toxic emissions in the event of a fire.

Motor industry in SA

The South African motor industry has accepted Lapp Cable as a reliable solution partner with more than 200 km of Olflex supplied over the last five years.

Lapp – wireless

Lapp’s Satel radios are used in place of a data cable and can reach distances of up to tens of kilometres depending on the terrain and output power. These radios have been used for a multitude of applications in numerous sectors, for example airports, industrial plants and traffic control. An exciting new product is the SATELLAR digital system which is a smart radio modem combining TCP/IP functionalities, a Linux platform and a versatile modular structure.

Proper antenna selection improves the performance of a radio network making it more controlled, closed and tolerant to possible interference. There are three basic types distinguished by radiation characteristics:

* Omni-directional.

* Offset pattern.

* Directional.

The company invites users unfamiliar with wireless or antenna technologies to contact them for a full design consultation.

Lapp – Ethernet Direct

Industrial Ethernet refers to the use of Ethernet and other proprietary protocols such as Modbus and Profinet in industrial applications like automation and process control. An Ethernet switch provides a cost-effective method for attaching multiple devices to a common network connection.

Ethernet Direct has released an industrial 8-port managed switch that supports Modbus/OPC and has direct ring technology. The new MRM-800E/EC has self-healing technology that can recover from any network downtime in less than 300 ms. The scada application can monitor the status of Ethernet and fibre ports with Modbus or OPC protocols. For integration with sensors and alarms in IP digital networks, functions such as tag-based VLAN, port based VLAN, QoS, port tracking, cable testing and port mirroring are supported. The MRM-80 series is supplied standard with conformal coating plus two power inputs that can be connected to live DC power sources.

Lapp – Profibus

Lapp employs certified engineers giving the company the ability to design, install, test, and in some cases even certify, Profibus networks for its customers. According to Lapp, testing and de-bugging a Profibus network can become a very complex matter. Information is required in different systems, at different points in time, in distinct forms and in varying degrees of detail. The company bases its methodology on the use of three diagnostic tools designed by industrial communication specialists Trebing & Himstedt.

1. eXIP 2 (Ethernet Profibus interface): Enables continuous, parallel monitoring of plants with several Profibus strands and also functions as a central access point for the Profibus scope.

2. Profibus scope: Allows quick and easy troubleshooting of acute problems in daily operation or during commissioning.

3. OPC server DP: Enables permanent monitoring of Profibus strands by integrating diagnosis information into automation systems.

Lapp Kable has been involved in the fields of wireless, industrial Ethernet and Profibus for many years. Over time it has developed the products and expertise needed which complement the cable offerings to provide its customers with complete user specific connection solutions.
