Systems integrator provides full range of product and services

November 2000 System Integration & Control Systems Design

Contel Plus is a project engineering company in the automation field providing PLC, scada and drive-related solutions, adding value to customer processes and products

Contel works closely with GE Industrial Systems South Africa and is an authorised systems integrator for them. GE has been voted the most admired company in the USA two years in a row, an excellent achievement in the highly competitive USA market. The Industrial Systems division has expertise in the following fields: material handling, metals, mining, oil and gas, paper, plastics, pharmaceutical, printing and converting, pump applications, textiles, water/wastewater.

GE is undoubtedly a global player in the industrial game and Contel provide service, support and parts in southern Africa for GE equipment.

The GE Industrial product range includes PLCs, operator interfaces, scada, drives, switchgear, just about anything required for industrial projects. The PLCs range from the Versamax Micro to the Series 90-70 that has noteworthy performance, with triple modular redundancy (TMR). Cimplicity is one of the most powerful, easy-to-use industrial automation software packages - and one of the least expensive to own and operate. The drive models start with units specified at hundreds of watts and extend to those capable of above a Megawatt.

Contel sells the AMCI range of resolvers in South Africa. These are robust and interface directly to PLC rack cards for GE Fanuc, Siemens and Allen-Bradley PLCs. The rack cards are manufactured by AMCI and are also available from Contel.

Contel has upgraded the control of generator field regulators of the Ward Leonard system recently with great success. These systems are still used in many industries with the rotating equipment in good condition but the controls are not available anymore. The generator field (GF) control is not a standard off the shelf DC drive, but requires special software that controls the field current, armature current and speed in tandem regulators. This requires high-speed regulation together with highly stable loops to prevent oscillations and overshoots.

Contel provides back-up and standby service to products and projects that it has completed, This service can be arranged as a contract or on a 'as needed' basis.

GE equipment is used by OEMs on plants and machines that are manufactured anywhere in the world, and imported for local customers. In some cases the OEM is not present in the country and does not have the know-how to support the equipment locally. Contel can support this equipment for OEMs or customers locally.
