World class data management solution

April 2006 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Eurotherm is offering its 6000 Series data recording solution. This new range of advanced data recording products is claimed to set new standards in terms of ease of use, ease of configuration, security of data and adaptability. The Series, consisting initially of two advanced graphical (paperless) recorder models supported by a range of hardware and software options, will replace the earlier, widely used Eurotherm 5000V Series, with full software compatibility and interchangeability.

The 6000 Series incorporates the latest innovations in data management, recording and display technology, which Eurotherm says makes it the most advanced of its kind in the world. The company's advanced proprietary data encryption techniques give it the most secure data recording currently available, and touch screen displays provide bright, clear, functionality. There are numerous communications features, options and software tools that make them easily configurable for a wide spectrum of demanding applications across many industries.

Adaptable touch screens are a key feature of the new instruments, providing intuitive operator interfaces with no complicated button pressing sequences. Menu selection and data entry is easy and they may also be configured in a WYSIWYG environment by 'dropping in' one or more Java components from the supplied library to create unique user screens. In addition, active areas can be created that can include images, imported in GIF format, process graphics or buttons. Model 6100A, the smaller of the two instruments, uses a digital 1/4 VGA colour touch screen display, while the larger unit, the 6180A, uses a larger XGA display (1024 x 768 pixels) offering higher resolutions and sharper images.

For applications where a touch screen is not the most practical for the process - maybe in a particularly dirty environment - a mouse can be plugged into the USB port on the front of the recorder and used for navigation. This demonstrates how relevant 'plug-and-play' USB devices can be simply interfaced with the unit without complex configuration procedures. In this way for instance, a memory stick can be used as an additional data archiving device, or a USB bar code scanner can be used to record bar code information. Every instrument has one USB port and two more can optionally be fitted.

The instruments can be ordered with varying levels of onboard flash memory - so customers need only purchase the memory necessary for their applications. In cases where a large amount of onboard storage of historical data is required, up to 96 megabytes of memory can be selected. Removable media choices for the 6000 include compact flash (CF), secure digital (SD) media, and USB memory stick.

One of the most powerful features of the 6000 series is the use of Eurotherm's Bridge Software. This provides the user with a secure and simple connection to the instrument from anywhere that has access to a local or remote network. From this remote connection, the user can carry out any operation that could be done on the instrument itself. The remote viewing connection has the same look and feel as the instrument display but is independent - so if the user scrolls between screens within the Bridge session this will not change the local operator view on the plant floor. Importantly, the data is viewed in 'realtime' and automatic screen refresh and recording continues while the data is being viewed.

In addition to providing plug-and-play remote visualisation over the standard office Ethernet, the recorder software can be configured and upgraded from a single point of administration using the built in ftp client/server software. A central Security Manager server can also be used to set security permissions, thus restricting access to sensitive data.

Ethernet configuration is automatic, using BootP, DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), or alternatively a fixed IP can be specified. SNTP (Simple Network Time Protocol) is used for basic time synchronisation. Other communications interfaces include Modbus TCP and RTU master and slave and two serial ports.

The Series has a number of features, including a new network connection facility that makes it easy to install. Particular attention has been given to ensure that the upgrade path from the 5000 Series is as seamless as possible. For example, the configuration of the 5000 Series together with individual screens can be uploaded directly into the new 6000 Series.

For existing 5000 Series users many functions will appear familiar, since the menu structure and display information on the 6000 follows the format of the 5000. These graphical menus have clear, complete text, making operation simple and easy. Menus are dynamic and only show features that have been defined and to which the user has authorised access.

The wide portfolio of software options on the instruments can be used on a 'try before you buy' basis. Users can select any software option at any time to try for a limited period (30 days elapsed time) to see if it is what is needed for the process.

The two models in the new series are claimed to offer the most powerful and flexible security capability of any data recorder in this class. In terms of FDA validated applications, the 6000 Series offers specific strengths, including signed operator comments, integrated audit trail and password element controls. An integral audit trail function, that can be used to help meet CFR 21 Part 11, is available for complete traceability of configuration and operator actions - suitable for many applications from validated pharmaceutical systems to the heat treatment of metals.

Eurotherm's simple to operate Security Manager software tool provides unlimited user accounts and allows operator access to individual or multiple recorders. Access to recorder functions and data can be securely controlled and various security strategies can be applied to different zones across the plant. Users can be assigned to one or more of the process zones on an individual basis, and there is no software limit on the number of unique user names and passwords that can be stored, with each user being assigned individual access permissions.

Hardware security

Both instruments have the option of an electronic lock on the media flap. This provides a basic level of security for the media contained behind the flap as well as traceability of access to the media. The flap is opened by user password entry (if the user has that permission level) and the operation is recorded along with other operator actions when the audit trail is enabled.
