Pressure Measurement & Control

Pressure transmitters seen as strategic products

October 2004 Pressure Measurement & Control

Yokogawa Electric has developed the DPharp EJX Series of differential pressure and pressure transmitters. The new transmitters will be added to the current EJA Series of the DPharp family, launched during 2003 as strategic new products that will target the global industrial automation (IA) business. This new series can simultaneously measure both differential pressure and static pressure.

Differential pressure and pressure transmitters measure the flow of gases, steam and liquid, and tank level, and are the most common type of sensors used for this purpose. They represent the largest market for sensors used in the field, estimated at $1,3 billion in global sales, with approximately 1,5 million units sold per year. Yokogawa currently has the second largest share (20%) of this market.

The new product's delivery of cost-efficient ultra-high performance promises to radically alter the competitive landscape, and Yokogawa believes that the DPharp EJX Series will increase its share of the sensor market to 30% by 2005. With its highly regarded distributed control system and the DPharp EJX Series, Yokogawa is aiming to secure global pre-eminence in the IA sector.

EJX features include:

* Multisensing: The evolution of the silicon resonant sensor has enabled the simultaneous measurement of differential pressure and static pressure with a single sensor. This is a world first.

* Multivariables: The mass flow rate can be measured by inputting process temperatures from external temperature sensors.

* High accuracy: This series has two levels of accuracy, Standard and Reference Class. The Standard type delivers 0,04% accuracy, and the Reference Class type hones accuracy down to 0,025%, the highest level of precision ever provided. The EJX Series also introduces Total Accuracy, a pioneering concept that provides a comprehensive performance evaluation benchmark. Total Accuracy incorporates the conditions of the actual usage environment such as ambient temperature, static pressure and overpressure that affect measurement accuracy.

* High-speed response: This product has a response time of 95 milliseconds, making it the fastest smart model in the world.

* Diagnostic feature: This series has a diagnostic feature that detects blockages in an impulse line.

* Compliance with safe instrumentation standards: Yokogawa plans to obtain the Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL2) certificate for the ISO61508 safety standard from TÜV Rheinland.

"In 1991 we developed a silicon resonant sensor using MEMS* technology," says Toshio Kimura, senior vice-president of the Control Products Business Headquarters. "This allowed us to introduce digital sensing technology into the area of differential pressure and pressure transmitters that had previously only been analog. The sensors in the DPharp Series use a principle of measurement that is completely different from previous models, ensuring greater accuracy and stability. After more than 10 years on the market, we now have 1,2 million transmitters operating throughout the world.

"Yokogawa puts itself in the customer's shoes and aims to provide a continuous supply of the most appropriate solutions based on state-of-the-art technology. By combining the further evolution of our well-established silicon resonant sensors with digital circuit technology, we have developed an innovative product that can simultaneously measure multiple process data such as static pressure and differential pressure. In the future, we also intend to devote resources to the development of new technologies in this area in order to continue delivering next-generation sensing technology."
