Sturdy power supplies for automation applications

July 2004 Electrical Power & Protection

Phoenix Contact is offering three power supply product families intended for universal use – these are the small Mini Power power supply, the flat Step Power units and the high-performance Quint Power primary switching regulator.

All three power supplies are all suitable for use anywhere in the world, they offer high operational reliability with a comfortable power reserve, and they come with the international approvals.

Worldwide use with wide range power input

Worldwide use for these devices has been achieved through the implementation of a wide-range input. One broad input voltage range is the only way to ensure testing of the entire installation for any production location worldwide, without any chance of incorrect input voltage switching. Having one device that caters for all input voltages saves storage costs and reduces all associated logistical expenses.

High operational reliability

Phoenix Contact power supplies are designed to work in environments where static voltage drops, transient supply voltage failures and lasting phase loss can occur. In an emergency, generously sized capacitors ensure a power failure bridging time of more than 20 ms under full load. The reserve is provided to bridge switching from faulty supply networks with voltage dips lasting typically 10 ms. Thanks to the consistent use of 105° capacitors, this property is maintained for a long time. In an iterative optimisation process, the capacitors are arranged on the PCB to be exposed to a flow of cool air and minimum heat radiation.

Power reserve contributes to reliable starting

Reliable starting for heavy loads is ensured with a power reserve of up to 100% - the power boost (see Figure 1). This is an effective remedy for voltage drops that arise when powering up loads with high start-up currents. An international certification package including the CB scheme with UL 60 950 for information technology installations and UL 508 for industrial control installations opens up the way to worldwide use.

Universal 24 V supply

The second generation of Quint Power power supply devices achieves a universal 24 V supply of 60 to 90 W (see Figure 2). Output currents of 2,5 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 A are available with a regulated, adjustable output voltage of 22,5 to 28,5 V d.c. These power supplies provide full output power even after losing one phase.

Preventive function monitoring is able to diagnose impermissible operating conditions and so minimise shutdown times for complex installations. For instance, Quint Power 20 A can be drawn on with a nominal output power of 480 W: the integrated power reserve provides 650 W power. That corresponds to a steady current output of 27 A at 24 V d.c. If the output current increases further, the output voltage automatically decreases, reliably protecting the connected electronics equipment. As soon as the specified voltage drops by more than ten per cent, the function LED starts flashing. For remote monitoring of this status, there is a potential-free relay output provided as well as an active transistor switching output. In addition to providing device function information, the DC OK signal also gives early warning of system overload.

Mini Power

Built to a width of just 22,5 or 45 mm, the power supplies in the Mini Power product family are especially compact (see Figure 3). As well as a 24 V version with output currents of 0,65 and 2 A, special voltages are also available with 5 V/3 V and 15 V/1 A.

The devices provide a power reserve of 100%. Thus, with ambient temperatures up to +30°C, Mini Power 2 A can provide a steady current of 4 A at 24 V d.c. With ambient temperatures up to +60°C, this current may be sustained for up to several minutes.

Step Power

The Step Power power supply offers a flat-design solution (see Figure 4). Its height of 58 mm and the double-stepped housing are dimensioned to ease integration into small installation distribution panels. The device family covers the full voltage range with 5 V/4 A, 12 V/2,4 A, 24 V/1,5 A and 48 V/0,75 A. A power reserve of 100% ensures reliable power-up.
