Power quality analyser has extended functionality

October 2001 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Fluke's new 43B power quality analyser is now available from Spescom MeasureGraph, leading supplier of test and measurement equipment. The Fluke 43B gives all those who work with power systems and networks a complete, single-tool solution to track down problems and monitor all the relevant power quality parameters. With its ability to show current and voltage waveforms, calculate power parameters and capture voltage sags and swells, transients and inrush currents, the Fluke 43B is a complete power quality analyser in a rugged and compact handheld package.

These capabilities make the Fluke 43B the ideal tool to quickly solve many common problems in the power domain: tripping circuit breakers, overheating transformers and cables, motors that burn out, lamps that flicker and computers that fail with no visible cause. The Fluke 43B can detect the underlying power quality problems that cause all these indications and the appropriate corrective measures can be taken.

Enhanced dynamic and intermittent fault tracking

The Fluke 43B is designed for electrical engineers, utility technicians, electrical contractors, facility engineers, industrial equipment technicians and many others. The improved user interface of the Fluke 43B makes it easy to operate, while its enhanced dynamic and intermittent fault tracking functionalities, including new three-phase power measurements and harmonics logging, add valuable test capabilities.

Built-in multimeter and dual-input digital scope

The Fluke 43B also includes multimeter functions as well as a 25 MS/s dual-input digital oscilloscope with advanced triggering capabilities. With an optional 10:1 voltage probe, the scope can capture signals with a bandwidth of up to 20 MHz. This combination means the Fluke 43B is the only tool engineers need to carry to deal with a wide range of power-quality and related issues.

New three-phase measurements

The Fluke 43B's power mode allows measurement of three-phase power in balanced systems using just a single set of voltage probes and one current clamp, with on-screen graphics to show the user how to set up the measurement. Also new are crest factor readings for volt-amps-hertz mode. The instrument has 20 storage locations (twice as many as the original Fluke 43) for settings, waveform data and readings, which can be recalled for later analysis using cursors.

The latest FlukeView software is supplied with the new meter. FlukeView supports logging, reading and display of all harmonics right down to the 51st, including THD and phase angles of individual harmonics, as well as all other readings from the 43B's display. After downloading to the PC, the data can be analysed and included in reports. FlukeView for the PC is now a 32-bit Windows 95-style program, and runs under all versions of Windows 95, 98, Me, NT4.0 and 2000.

Smarter user interface

With its further enhanced user interface, it now allows toggling through the most frequently used power quality modes with a single keystroke. There is easy access to the Fluke 43B's scope functions, with just four function keys and a straightforward menu.

Power monitoring capability

Power monitoring over extended periods is an important asset in tracking down intermittent faults. Voltage and current values can be continuously monitored on a cycle-by-cycle basis for up to 16 days, and the times and dates of interruptions can be read simply using cursors. Up to 40 transients or distorted waveforms can be recorded and saved, allowing for the causes of distortion to be correlated with time and date recordings.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
