PSY extends its offerings

System Integration & Control Systems Design
PSY International, a recognised systems integrator for a number of well-known international brands, was recently appointed as an integrator for AC/DC.
Paul Young, a director of PSY International, explains that the relationship allows PSY to afford its customers a wider range of products and services. In a recent project for a water pumping station in northern KwaZulu-Natal, PSY was able to offer the client a solution that entailed the retrofitting of a medium voltage AuCom L-series MVE soft starter. From the placement of the order to the final commissioning was a matter of weeks, ensuring that the client’s operation experienced minimal downtime.
The AuCom soft starter is a key product in the water industry due to the fact that the flow of water requires a soft start and a soft stop to ensure the gradual increase of water pressure on starting the pumps, and a gradual decrease when stopping. “The L-Series MVE soft starter is characterised by its durability and reliability and known for its ability to reduce the maintenance required on pumps,” says Thomas Zirk, sales director MV, AuCom, Germany. “A classic example of the longevity of the starter is that the first unit installed in 2001 is still successfully operating.”
Energy management
Turkish-based energy management company Entes Elektronik has partnered with AC/DC for the past 10 years. “We are now leveraging the technology and the intellectual property of this relationship to offer our customers a solution to the ongoing energy crisis through the deployment of Entes’ energy quality monitoring solutions,” explains Young. “The end result is increased energy efficiency and minimal impact on the environment.”
“In addition to the Entes measurement devices, PSY can now offer network analysers and power factor controllers, slipring motor gearboxes and correction devices,” points out Entes area sales manager, Saner Demir. “Hand in glove with this is the cloud-based remote monitoring software developed by Entes, which measures system parameters and data such as capacitor levels, reactive energy levels and slipring motor operation. Additionally available are the Entbus and Energy Doctor software solutions to ensure that power factor correction is carefully controlled at all times.”
Compressor controller
PSY International has developed and manufactured a universal compressor controller (UCC) in response to a demand from its customers. The key product of Independent Compressor Companies (marketed by RossYung) is the 10” Emko HMI (supplied by AC/DC). This UCC can be retrofitted to any compressor, giving users the option to select VSD control for energy savings and, in the unlikely event of VSD failure, the system can revert back to Star Delta controls.
Young outlines a number of benefits and noteworthy features of the controller that include the fact that no OEM password codes are required. The controller has selectable controls – DOL (direct on line), SD, VSD and soft starter – and is easy to install. Safety features include dual pressure sensing, multiple temperature sensing, drive and non-drive end protection, and protective startup from dormancy.
“We believe that this controller provides independent compressor companies with the opportunity to offer their clients an alternative solution,” concludes Young. “Since all control elements are manufactured from proven products, we are confident that the uptake will be favourable.”

When a design engineer sets out to design a new part, component, or assembly, the intent is to meet the design requirements for fit, form and function, and also incorporate a certain degree of innovation and elegance to the overall design. There is no reason to re-invent the wheel by introducing a new design.
