SAIMC: Durban branch

December 2015 SAIMC

The November technology meeting of the Durban branch of the SAIMC was held on 4 November at the Durban Country Club as usual.

Professor Ralph Naidoo, assistant professor at the Mangosuthu University of Technology took us through the challenges of bridging the gap between education and industry and this very relevant topic drew a large and interested crowd who fired questions and further stimulated the conversation.

As Professor Naidoo explained: “The gap between education and industry remains a disadvantage to learners, manufacturing and ultimately our economy,” and his presentation covered the current deficiencies that need to be rectified in order to optimise the system for industry and bridge that gap.

Professor Naidoo is currently the subject leader in Process Automation & Control Engineering. He has a doctoral degree in electrical engineering and has worked extensively on measurement and automation systems specialising in PLCs, DCS, VSDs and sscada so he was well qualified to enlighten us on this topic. His presentation will be written up and published in a forthcoming issue of SA Instrumentation & Control.

“Never have so many owed so much to so few.” This phrase is a famous quote by Winston Churchill, referring to the efforts of the Royal Air Force pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain during World War II. It highlights the immense gratitude owed to the relatively small number of pilots who played a crucial role in defending the United Kingdom from the German Luftwaffe.
