SAIMC: Vaal branch

November 2015 SAIMC

With the highest membership attendance of the year, the Vaal branch definitely started spring with a bang at the September Technology Evening.

We had the privilege of a WIKA sponsored presentation by product manager Lourens van Niekerk. The topic was galvanic isolation and Ex barriers, which covered some of the fundamental aspects of intrinsic safety for hazardous areas. The basic principle of how a Zener barrier can limit the energy delivered to a field device in a hazardous area in order to mitigate the risk of an explosion was discussed. On the other hand, the galvanic isolation prevents noise effects and transients from affecting the measurement signals. The presentation also gave a brief introduction into temperature measurement elements such as the PT100. The audience was shown samples of a temperature transmitter with an Ex housing. Once again it was an interactive session with participation from our members during the presentation.
