April Technology Evening
The branch hosted its April Technology Evening at the Eskom marketing centre in Edgemead. The presenter was Alex Tanner from VMware who presented on ‘Responding to the next wave of IT transformation’. Some of the topics that Alex covered were:
* Latest developments transforming the delivery of ICT services.
* Criteria for informed decision making.
* Recommended strategies for business.
* Service delivery challenges in 2013.
* Cloud computing changing the IT landscape.
One of the main points of discussion was the ‘Big Data’ idea. The fact that there is a huge amount of data being generated by users all the time that needs to be stored. The landscape has changed, whereby this data can be stored anywhere in the world as per the business strategy. Hardware and software used to be assets that a company had to own and maintain. But with the switch to SaaS (Software as a Service) in the Cloud, this is no longer the case.
The other shift in the IT landscape is the proliferation of mobile devices. It is said that 84% of employees use some kind of mobile device for work, 66% of global information workers use 2+ devices, tablets reaching 100 million in annual shipments in only four years. This is leading to a concept called BYOD (bring your own device) whereby employees will use their personal devices at work. It is believed that already some 258 million information workers practice BYOD.
Alex further supposed that a new strategy for workforce productivity will encompass the following:
* Evolve and support existing legacy systems and applications.
* Simplify diverse applications and data into centralised services.
* Centrally manage and secure applications and services.
* Empower the workforce with flexible access across devices, locations and connectivity, taking advantage of device capabilities.
The branch thanks Alex and VMware for supporting us in advancing the objectives of the SAIMC.
Achievement
It was an exciting moment when the branch chairman presented Selvan Murugan with a certificate of appreciation from the SAIMC council. Council presented this certificate in recognition of outstanding service during 2012 at the 2013 AGM. The chairman congratulated Selvan and thanked him for his dedicated service to the SAIMC. Selvan has added a lot of value to the SAIMC with passion and enthusiasm. Well Done Selvan, keep up the good work!
The next Technology Evening will be on Thursday, 20 June. If you are interested in robotics, or are just fascinated by robots, this will be the presentation for you.
