High temperatures, molten metal and heavy loads, steel production puts a lot of stress on both man and machine. So it is only natural that safety and availability are among the top priorities for steel plant managers, not only to prevent potentially deadly accidents from happening, but also to make sure that production never stops unexpectedly. For that, robust measurement equipment is required that provides reliable data as well as smart control solutions.
The offering
Endress+Hauser’s process experts help operators comply with functional safety standards IEC/EN 61508 (safety integrity level) and IEC/EN 61511 (safety instrumented systems) in accordance with EN 13849 by selecting the best industry-optimised instrumentation, service and solution package from a complete portfolio based on more than 60 years of experience.
Safe, robust and precise water leakage monitoring
Malfunctions in water circuits can be dangerous to both equipment and personnel. Regardless of the cooling circuit type, principles for leak detection are as follows: the inlet and outlet flow rates of a cooling circuit are measured by means of suitable flowmeters, either electromagnetic or ultrasonic. The inlet and outlet temperatures are also acquired from sensors mounted in close proximity to the flowmeters. The system uses separate temperature sensors to achieve maximum accuracy.

Electromagnetic flowmeters are typically used for the circuit flow rate measurement. Their physical principle is based on Faraday’s law of induction, where a voltage is induced in a conductor moving in a magnetic field. In electromagnetic measurement, the flowing medium corresponds to the moving conductor. The induced voltage is proportional to the flow velocity and is detected by two measuring electrodes and transmitted to the amplifier. Flow volume is then computed on the basis of the pipe's diameter. A constant magnetic field is required for accurate measurement. When using this principle of measurement, it is important not to install the flowmeter too close to the magnetic field of an arc furnace.
In a furnace leakage detection application there is added value in using temperature measurements to support the control. In addition, conductivity can be related to concentration and possible scaling in the line. If flow through the lines is restricted through calcification, the cooling system will not work optimally and can cause serious production losses.
Heartbeat technology: take a step towards Industrie 4.0
Digital fieldbus networks connect field instruments to the control and maintenance systems, in combination with smart sensors featuring Heartbeat technology. This enables instrument verification, advanced process diagnostics and condition monitoring functions that permit managers to plan maintenance procedures and ensure availability. Features of the system include:
• Complete project management including assembling, cabling and engineering of the system.
• Smart sensors with diagnostic functionality.
• Web-based tools for easy access to information about the installed devices and automatic device documentation (W@M portal).

It is my opinion that most tuning methods are very crude. They do of course also offer a starting point for tuning if one is not fortunate enough to have a sophisticated tuning package like a Protuner around.
