Vibration and temperature are the most common parameters used for machinery protection. However, it is now believed that vibration is the better measurement over temperature because it gives an earlier warning and more information, with the vibration signal containing many frequencies and many amplitudes, each pertaining to some moving part of the machine.

The units available in the RC range now combine these two parameters and protect critical plant from high temperature and high vibration levels. They consist of a 2-wire 4-20 mA output to monitor vibration levels and a DC voltage output that has a 10 mV/°C directly proportional to the measured temperature. Different velocity (mm/sec) ranges, process connection and electrical connections are available. The standard unit, which would cover most applications, has a vibration range of 25 mm/sec RMS, an 8 mm stud process connector and a 3 m cable connection. The unit’s environmental rating is IP67 and it has a case material of stainless steel with top cable entry.

The unit has local on-plant indication of both temperature and vibration. Both process variables have their own High and High-High alarms, along with 4-20 mA retransmission.

The local control box requires a simple 90 to 260 V AC or DC power supply only. With good information on the mechanical health of a machine, the running time can be extended, saving on production and maintenance costs.
