Built for extreme field environments

May 2016 Industrial Computer Hardware

The Internet of Things (IoT) trend is shaping the design and implementation of industrial applications. Although the industrial devices in plant settings can be hard-wired for communications, a significant number are deployed at remote sites, where hard-wired networks are not a feasible option. Thus, the necessity of wireless communications – 3G, 4G LTE, or Wi-Fi connectivity – is increasing.

Since wireless signals travel through the air, it should come as no surprise that performance is closely related to environmental conditions. The fact that the LTE module generates more heat than other wireless options requires computer designers to use housings with thermal properties that allow them to radiate away more of that heat. The thermal design of Moxa’s new LTE-enabled V2403 series wireless computers ensures reliable system operation in temperatures ranging from -40 to 70°C. “The V2403 series are designed for use in extreme field conditions,” said Edison Huang, product manager in Moxa’s computing division. “These computers are the first devices to provide such a wide operating temperature range with a 4G LTE module installed. This breakthrough was only made possible due to Moxa’s patented thermal design.”

The V2403 industrial wireless computers use the Intel 3rd generation Core-i series processor to provide high computing performance for local data analysis and processes. With an SD slot and mSTA connector, the user does not need to worry about storage limitations.

With versatile I/O interfaces, the Moxa V2403 series is compatible with a wide range of devices, including legacy equipment, which is great for helping reduce installation costs. The computer has 4 built-in serial ports, 2 Ethernet LAN ports, and 4 sets of DI/DO ports. It also supports a full range of wireless connectivity protocols, including Wi-Fi, 4G LTE, 3G, GPS, and Bluetooth modules that fit into the computer’s 3 mini PCIe sockets. The range of powerful x86 CPU options, compact dimensions and rugged design are ideal for Industrial IoT deployment. Users will be able to reduce data latency, installation and maintenance costs, and most importantly, use a device that offers great stability and peace of mind.
