Over the past 30 years, Endress+Hauser South Africa has developed from a niche provider of level instruments sold via an agency, to a R350 million BBBEE company that sets the standard for process automation in this country. Managing director, Rob MacKenzie credits the company’s continued success to its culture, which reflects its mission statement – ‘to strive to generate outstanding value for our customers’.
The company has recently invested in a new calibration rig designed to accommodate a wide range of diameters from 8 to 100 mm using four master meters which are calibrated once a year at an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited calibration facility in Switzerland. Calibration certificates are traceable to the ISO 17025 international standard.
As the field of process automation is characterised by rapid technological development, Endress+Hauser is also committed to training both internally and externally – from SETA accredited learnership programmes to international training of full time employees, as well as the company’s School of Process Instrumentation. It has also spearheaded the establishment of the Dr Georg Endress training facilities at the Tshwane South FET College, the Namibia Institute of Mining & Technology and the University of Johannesburg. Each is equipped with state-of-the-art technology that provides process instrumentation training and covers the whole field of automation.
Through the implementation of employment equity and affirmative action programmes in line with the Employment Equity Act, the company has also created an environment of non-discriminatory, sustainable diversity as part of its competitive advantage for the future. Despite its European roots, Endress+Hauser South Africa has demonstrated its commitment to the people of Africa with the establishment of a BBBEE trust to benefit all of its staff and the community at large. The Ubuntu Trust owns 33,3% of the local operation, the beneficiaries of which include staff from the previously disadvantaged community and the CIDA Empowerment Trust, a non-profit, private higher education institution. “Our Level 3 BBBEE accreditation provides you, our customer, with 110% recognition of your spend,” Mackenzie says.
“Endress+Hauser has firmly established itself as a leading and innovative provider of process automation solutions to businesses across Africa. At the same time, it has invested time and resources into developing the people and the country that make this success possible. This makes it a true South African champion,” he concludes.
