Wireless radiation detection for grapple installation
January 2014
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
The new Thermo Scientific RadEye GR 2010 series provides a grapple-mounted radiation detection capability to minimise the threat of radioactive material in a scrap metal stream. The detector is ruggedly shock mounted inside its protective dome, a combination that has proven durable in the harsh conditions of scrap metal handling. The detector radiation signal output is passed to a radio device mounted at the side of the grapple body. From there the data is transmitted wirelessly to the RadEye R, a data display and alarming unit located in the crane’s cabin in direct view of the operator.
The low power consumption concept allows up to 1300 hours of grapple detector operation without battery exchange (4 x AA size) to minimise maintenance requirements.
The wireless RadEye R can be operated for up to 600 hours with two standard AAA sized batteries and is mounted in the crane cabin by a suction cup holder. It can be easily moved with the grapple to an alternative crane if required. Up to 1600 sets of radiation data are stored automatically in the RadEye R, which keeps the operator informed via its LCD display, LED light and acoustic sounder.
The RadEye GR 210 is a powerful radiation search tool designed to minimise the impact on operator workflow and grapple capacity.
