Antenna diversity

August 2013 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Users may have noticed two antenna ports on some of Elpro’s industrial wireless radio systems and wondered what exactly they are for. The answer: antenna diversity.

Antenna diversity is a scheme that typically uses two or more antennas to improve the quality and reliability of a wireless link. It can be used as receive diversity, transmit diversity, or a combination of both.

Scenario one: When there is no line-of-sight (LOS) path, or a near obstacle exists between two radios, the signal can be reflected and create multiple paths. These put the signals out of phase which cause distortion, create time delays and attenuate the signal. All of these affect the receiving radio’s ability to accept a clear signal.

Scenario Two: Another form of receive diversity is where users can locate a higher gain antenna on the receive-only port of the radio. This allows weak signals to be picked up without any impact on the Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) of the radio.

Scenario Three: Transmit diversity can also be used, typically for repeating signals over longer distances with Yagi Antennas. Limitations exist depending on the protocol i.e. multicast messages will alternate between antennas. However, TCP messages, which are acknowledged, learn which port to use for transmitting a message.

Using antenna diversity can provide a robust link where multi-paths exists or even with moving equipment. The ELPRO 245U-E Ethernet Modems support both transmit and receive diversity, while the 615M-1 cellular modem supports receive diversity only.
