New Hirschmann brand Software Platform 8.0
July 2013

Belden has launched version 8.0 of the software platform from its Hirschmann product range. The new release significantly extends the functionality of managed switches from the Mach, Mice, Rail and Octopus families. Depending on the switch family, new features include special tools such as an integrated IEC61850 server for seamless integration with data networks for power generation and distribution. A PTP power profile according to IEEE C37.238 also allows these networks to be accurately synchronised. Thanks to support for Jumbo frames, which ensure optimum utilisation of user data, high-resolution video applications are also possible. Furthermore, in addition to extensions for Profinet and Ethernet/IP, the release for all four switch families offers additional mechanisms for detecting overload situations, as well as improved diagnostic, documentation and encryption mechanisms. Like the previous version, the new software platform supports extensive management, diagnostic and filter functionality, as well as various redundancy methods, security mechanisms and real-time applications. As a result, it is particularly suited to applications in the energy industry, the oil and gas sector and the automotive industry.
Both RSR switches from the Rail family and switches from the MACH 1000 series feature the integrated IEC61850 server and the PTP power profile. Jumbo frames are supported by MACH104 and MACH1040 devices.
The mechanisms for detecting overload situations, which ensure high network availability, offer the option of disabling ports in addition to various filter functions. These features are available for all four switch families as are the new diagnostic options which allow all ports to be mirrored to one port and differentiated according to data received and sent.
Thanks to an integrated ‘watermark’ it is possible to check whether the configuration of the switch still corresponds to the original state. SSHv2 enables secure encryption of console access. The security mechanisms include authentication, radius and port security.
With version 8.0 of the software platform from its Hirschmann product range, Belden offers one of the most powerful operating systems for industrial Ethernet switches currently available. Product manager Jürgen Schmid says: “With this release, managed switches from Hirschmann not only have more standard features, but also offer a host of special functions. For example, diagnostic information can be transmitted directly to controllers, making the switch an integral component of the respective application.”
