Leuze sensors for labelling applications

July 2012 Sensors & Transducers

Leuze’s forked sensors incorporating ultrasonic technology have been developed to offer users innovative functions accompanied by improved performance capabilities. The sensors have been developed for label detection and are capable of recognising material combinations including paper, film, metallic film labels or thin metal film on different backing materials with a high degree of accuracy. The sensor’s generous mouth width allows it to cope with non-standard label types.

Users already familiar with Leuze’s GSU 14 forked sensor series will notice the ‘I’ added in the type designation of the new Leuze IGSU 14B. This is an identifying nomenclature used to denote a separate warning input and this forked sensor has its own integrated self-monitoring facility making it capable of indicating errors during teach-in and in operation. Examples would include dirt accumulation or a changed signal threshold; this permits timely intervention and so increases process reliability.

From the commissioning stage, users of the sensors are supported by the new ‘Easy Teach’ function. Requiring only the push of a button, it simplifies the commissioning phase and allows the sensor to recognise the signal level with which it is able to work reliably.

Another innovative feature is the new auto level control (ALC) which provides for maximum performance reserves through independent online optimisation of the switching threshold. This is offered as an optional function and is recommended if minor material differences are anticipated in otherwise identical label types. In this case, slight changes in the signal level are recognised and automatically assimilated.

Featuring a compact metal housing, the performance of the new Leuze IGSU 14B is characterised by high precision and processing speed coupled with short response times of just 100 µs with an admissible belt speed of up to 240 m/min.
