Thermo Scientific's laser based CO2 analyser

July 2012 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

The ability to monitor greenhouse gases in the mid-infrared spectrum is desirable as simple, direct absorption approaches can be used to access many species with high specificity, sensitivity and accuracy. The Thermo Scientific IRIS 4100 mid-IR laser based CO2 analyser uses state of the art mid-infrared laser absorption spectroscopy to measure carbon dioxide. The instrument is capable of providing continuous, real-time measurements that are highly precise and accurate.

Using unique difference frequency generation (DFG) technology, the analyser is capable of providing measurements in the mid-infrared spectral region. Accessing carbon dioxide in the mid-infrared is advantageous, as the associated line strength is approximately 10 000 times stronger than in the near-infrared region, as displayed by the basic telecom laser output. DFG technology is based on the principle of two telecom laser sources that are combined in a single optical fibre. The combined lasers are then focused into a non-linear periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal. The signal is then transferred through an optical cell.

The laser, located within the optical cell of the IRIS 4100 analyser, is approximately 100 times narrower in frequency than the intrinsic absorption line-width and sweeps continuously through the associated lines at a repetition rate of 500 Hz. The single pass within the cell reduces the risk of mirror contamination and simplifies maintenance requirements.

This single box solution, featuring an internal pump, is designed for continuous operation and can be used in conjunction with external sampling interfaces. In addition, the IRIS 4100 provides numerous diagnostic monitoring features such as temperature, pressure, and line strength. It also includes web-based remote access to enable continuous monitoring of system performance and health in the field.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
