Coca-Cola chooses Movigear

SEW-Eurodrive modernises PET transport line for Coca-Cola reducing energy consumption by 75%.

In 2009, Coca-Cola HBC, the licensed bottling company of the Coca-Cola company in Austria, planned the modernisation of its transportation line for Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite products. The objectives were to reduce energy consumption on the line and also quantify the corresponding reduction in terms of CO2 emissions. After modernisation, reference measurements exceeded expectations: energy savings of 75% equating to a reduction CO2 emissions of about 39 000 kg per year had been achieved. According to Coca-Cola it did not go unnoticed that the system recommended by SEW paid for itself in less than a year.

Reducing energy consumption is an important requirement today when modernising machines and systems as it provides great potential for saving money and the environment. This is why Coca-Cola put these objectives at the top of its agenda when deciding to modernise the transport line at its plant.

The line links the bottling plant to the palletising system via a shrink packer. PET bottles holding 0,3 to 2,5 litres are handled in this area, newly equipped by SEW with 40 Movigear units. Power supply and communication are handled using SNI technology (single line network installation), allowing energy and communication transfer in one standard cable and decreasing the number of components required along with the corresponding installation costs.

The Movigear units work together with all the other components of the new transport line to achieve the 75% saving in energy consumption. For instance, the integrated Profibus capability contributes to energy savings by adding the ability to shut down the line efficiently and minimise energy consumption during rest and idle times.

SEW involved the electricity company Wien Energie from the start to assist in planning the modernisation by providing detailed energy consumption calculations to set the baseline and help achieve best possible efficiency from the new system. Wien Energie subsequently helped SEW verify the energy savings quoted during system qualification and handover to Coca-Cola.
