Cost-effective air quality monitoring

July 2010 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

International environmental monitoring specialist Aeroqual has launched its AQM 60 air quality station in South Africa. Aeroqual business development manager Paul Pickering says: “One of the system’s many advantages is its ability to acquire high quality data about airborne pollutants at lower capital and operational costs than reference stations. Also data can be relayed back to the user in real time. Traditionally, large reference stations are used in air quality monitoring, but owing to size and cost they are usually sparsely located and, in many instances, poorly maintained.”

Using smart measurement techniques coupled with a comprehensive understanding of material properties and operating conditions, Aeroqual has achieved instrument stability including compensation for drift of temperature, humidity and other interferences. The unit provides comparable results to those of high priced reference stations, while its compact size makes it suitable for mounting on existing poles and buildings.

Other features of the system include a large data capacity, full remote diagnostics and condition monitoring capabilities. It is compact and housed in a thermally controlled and weatherproof enclosure and can be equipped with an optional GSM/GPRS modem or Ethernet connection for remote data viewing.

The unit can be used to monitor the effectiveness of environment management strategies and contribute to pollution dispersion models. Mining and other heavy pollution applications are monitored on the perimeter, which enables the effects of air pollution on the surrounding environment to be checked and hot spots targeted so that the appropriate action can be taken.

Southern African distributor of Aeroqual products, Envirocon Instrumentation director Howard Palmer concludes: “Any product or system can only operate well if it is properly maintained. The modular design of AQM 60 makes for easy maintenance and calibration by the distributor, or even by the end user in some cases.”
